Mike Causey Announces Bid For North Carolina Insurance Commissioner At Dare County Press Conference

Earlier this week, Greensboro Republican Mike Causey formally announced his candidacy for the post of North Carolina Insurance Commissioner.  I previously wrote about Mr. Causey's background and qualifications here, and he revealed a little more about himself during his Dare County press conference on Monday:

Why did the Guilford County resident travel to Manteo to kick off his campaign?  One of the most contested issues in the race will be the ratemaking method used in North Carolina, which gives the Insurance Commissioner a great deal of power in setting property insurance rates - a topic near and dear to North Carolina's coastal residents, who face the risk of hurricanes every year.

The reason I started here is to bring focus on the problems of insurance in the coastal counties.  And I’m giong to be spending a lot of time in eastern North Carolina.
Mr. Causey was scheduled to attend more campaign events at other locations along the coast on Tuesday and Wednesday.

  1. I think Mr. Causey is carefully twisting some of the facts here to try to improve his argument that he should be elected. First, he must have read a different Auditor’s report than the rest of the state. The audit that he is speaking about clearly says the fault of the “missing buildings” was that of the Department of Administration, not Insurance. Secondly, saying that Goodwin has been unresponsive to the people in dare County and along the coast is the furthest thing from the truth! I know that he has been to dare himself several times since the storm and has sent special teams from his staff numerous times to Dare and other coastal counties to help those hit the hardest. Not only that, but he was the only elected official to take on FEMA and get their butts in gear when FEMA was leaving everyone without support. Goodwin was the one person from Raleigh that actually seemed like he did care.

And let me add this: I know from personal experience how accessible Goodwin and the Insurance Department are. The people at the Department of Insurance are the best example of how government should serve citizens that I know of.

I guess after running for and failing to win election to this office three times before, Mr. Causey is willing to say anything to try to get votes. That’s just sad.

  3. Mr. Goodwin is unresponsive to citizens who file complaints about unfair and fraudulent practices by insurance companies. I know this from personal experience. Mr. Goodwin won't even respond. First his office claimed they didn't have a budget to investigate my complaint against Farm Bureau and went so far as to misrepresent a provision of my insurance contract. Then after I blasted an email to several people within the department, a deputy commissioner had the same person who claimed there was no budget to investigate, do an investigation so that he could cover his tail. There are certain people within the DOI who work to protect and hide the practices of insurance companies. This is not in the best interests of the people. If Mr. Goodwin is afraid of the Insurance Companies, he needs to step down. I'm a democrat. I will vote Republican this year for this office.
